Its two 22” color touch screens are part of the operator’s field of vision without obstructing the operator’s view of the passengers. Each of the screens can be rotated 180°, so that they can be seen from the outside, through the glass window. The operator can therefore operate from the outside using his FreeMan remote control and have real-time information about the wind on the line, the causes of stopping…. The driving ergonomics are simplified as much as possible. The number of control buttons is minimal. The driving mimic display panel is clear and light effects heighten the indication of the driving mode.

Used by more than 2.5 million passengers each year, the Fourvière funicular is an integral part of the Lyon landscape. Inaugurated in 1900, it allows access from the historic district of Vieux Lyon to the Fourvière hill, overlooking the capital of the Gauls. As part of the major inspection work, SEMER, agent for the works, was entrusted, with POMA, with the electrical renovation of stations, track and vehicles: a project synonymous with stakes and challenges.

Even if the Fourvière funicular had undergone major modifications in 1985, the SYndicat Mixte des Transports pour le Rhône et l’Agglomération Lyonnaise, or SYTRAL, decided, in accordance with the legislation in force, to carry out a complete upgrade of the electrical architecture of the equipment, the line and the vehicles. Through the intervention of SEMER, which will be able to express all its experience and know-how, the ‘’Ficelle’’ will offer itself a real youth therapy and benefit from the latest technologies. Indeed, all electrical components and wiring works will be replaced to be refurbished: from vehicles to machinery, via the tunnel that connects the two stations. To do this, with the assistance of COMAG, it was first necessary to dismantle the machinery and vehicles.

A total renovation for a total commitment

To give the Fourvière funicular a second lease of life, SEMER has demonstrated a total commitment. Indeed, the timing of the project is tight because the works carried out by the company from the Upper Savoy region is coordinated with other companies in the POMA group. Nevertheless, within this constraining time frame, SEMER’s missions are not lacking, since it is necessary to renovate and replace everything. In the top station, the control command automated systems will be refurbished, as will the control and power cabinets, in order to increase the availability and reliability of the installation. A new high-efficiency traction motor of type asynchronous for improved energy efficiency for the main winch will also be installed, and a control desk integrating a driving screen with departure management, according to the time slots defined by the operator Kéolis Lyon. A screen of the same type will also be installed in the lower station.

With regard to vehicles, in cooperation with Sigma Composite, SEMER will install on-board automated systems with control desk in each train set, as well as a remote transmission automated system for the exchange of information between each vehicle and the control command system installed in the drive station. Safety is also taken into account by rewiring the electrical circuits of each train set according to the specific rules related to the “fire” risk. New motorizations for the automatic doors will be rearranged, controlled directly by the driver via a touch screen. Because SEMER has thought about operating comfort: drivers will benefit from new control desks equipped with touch screens, with particular attention being paid to the design and ergonomics of the driver’s stations in the cabin. New LED lights will also be installed on the two cars of the Fourvière funicular, thus contributing to the renewal of their design.

Safety comes first

For SEMER, safety is not only a requirement but also a prerequisite. As part of the major inspection of the Fourvière funicular and its serious facelift, SEMER will equip the ‘’Ficelle’’ with a high-performance braking system, designed and developed by POMA engineers, which already equips the people mover at Miami airport, among others. The system availability rate is also part of the requirements implemented, in order to provide the operator with maximum comfort for the operation and maintainability of the funicular. Thanks to the “hot” doubling of certain functions and the inventive design of SEMER engineers, the automated system makes it possible to ensure continuity of operation in nominal conditions, even in the event of components failure.

The winch is also equipped with redundant functional and safety subassemblies: a second inverter/motor torque and a second braking unit are installed to ensure better availability of the installation.

More than an intervening company, SEMER is a real partner for SYTRAL and the operator KÉOLIS, with whom it has been collaborating for many years. And the story should not stop there, since after pampering the Fourvière funicular, SEMER should intervene on the Saint-Just funicular at the beginning of 2019.

Operating comfort, maintenance, environmental footprint, the DirectDrive is particularly remarkable at several levels. Quiet in the station, the DirectDrive technology is also quiet in drive cabinets thanks to hydraulic cooling (which allows, by the way, to recover dissipated thermal energy). Comfort benefits that should not make you forget the essential: higher efficiency of the entire kinematic chain, lighter maintenance due to low speed and therefore lower mechanical wear. Add, at the electrical level, the filtering of harmonic currents and the compensation of reactive energy, at the ecological level, the absence of oil due to the absence of a gearbox, and the DirectDrive becomes essential (this drive solution also optimizes electrical premises thanks to the dimensions of the inverters modules – H x D x W : 2100 x 800 x 400 mm).

With drive commissioning all over the world (Pyrenees, Alps, South America, Asia…), SEMER has recorded very positive feedback!

Priority to availability

One of the strengths of DirectDrive is operation continuity. A motor stator consists of 48 windings. On small motor’s sizes, 2 “inverter” modules supply 24 windings each. On large sizes, 4 “inverter” modules supply 12 windings each. In the event of loss of a module or winding, if the motor is sufficiently oversized, degraded operation can be maintained at nominal speed and flow rate.

Production and after-sales service 100% SEMER

Within this range of assets, the most unknown advantage of DirectDrive is not the least important: SEMER’s technological mastery in its entirety. 100% of the components, of EC origin and mass-produced in large series by recognized industries, are thus bought and stored by SEMER, a guarantee of availability.

The entire assembly of the inverters is carried out by SEMER at the factory. The teams of technicians have been trained in the specificities of these inverters, their factory and on-site controls. SEMER engineers are experts in the implementation and adjustment of inverters, as well as in their diagnosis and component replacement. They are constantly supported by the inverters designers from the HTI group and participate in the continuous improvement of these products. Some components can be replaced directly by the operator, others must be replaced by SEMER. Its engineers, and those of the HTI group, can diagnose and possibly adjust the inverters remotely if the remote service is activated.

A solution of the future

The DirectDrive inverter owes its success to its simplicity and modularity, the result of the investment of highly skilled teams who also strive to meet the new needs of the markets: increase in ratings (torques) and voltage levels, operation with electric power supply on generator set, use with the ZenIS load simulation function or compatibility with the EcoDrive function, which allows to regulate the speed of the lift and queue volume.

With a view to providing its customers with ever more services, SEMER is formalizing its partnership with Electricité Montagne Pyrénées (EMP), a local player particularly active in the Pyrenees.

SEMER/EMP complementarity

“The control-command expertise and the production cycle of the equipment are always provided by SEMER, explains Marc BOTTOLLIER, President of SEMER. We rely on the skills of the EMP teams for on-site interventions. We also train its staff in our products.”

During the successive phases of an electrical equipment renovation project, for example, EMP technicians quickly intervene in the field for the first site scooting.

The design, manufacturing, assembly, testing and quality control stages remain the responsibility of SEMER and will always take place in Passy’s workshops.

Wiring, installation, connections can then be made by the EMP team, as can the power-up and testing of sensors and motors.

The SEMER teams carry out the final stage of adjustment and start-up. The collaboration with EMP obviously continues after the commissioning since the Ariège company is present locally to provide assistance at the beginning of operation, provide assistance with maintenance operations, establish diagnostics and troubleshooting if necessary.

The after-sales service process will always start with a first contact with SEMER. After the diagnostic phase, and for increased reactivity, a first level of troubleshooting can be provided by EMP, thanks in particular to a stock of components made available on site by SEMER.

A longstanding collaboration

SEMER had already been working with EMP for several years; “Electricité Montagne Pyrénées is a small team of young enthusiasts,” notes Marc BOTTOLLIER. They combine their electrotechnical skills and their passion for the mountains to work in the cable transport and hydraulics sector.” EMP technicians work on high-voltage substations as well as on power or control-command equipment; they have the necessary skills for cabling, connections and optical fibre pulling, adding to this their know-how for work that is difficult to access.

Among the latest collaborations between SEMER and EMP, an emergency operation in high season on the Ax-les-Thermes gondola lift to replace the inverter in one night, “a successful intervention thanks to the proximity of EMP, which was able to prepare it in advance.” For each situation – whether it is the replacement of the control cabinets of a chairlift in Saint-Lary, the installation of the new Planell de la Font chairlift in Soldeu, or work on service cable cars for hydroelectric installations – EMP brings its skills and knowledge of the field.

If the notion of after-sales service may seem immutable, SEMER is devoting its energy to developing it to adapt to the market of ski area operators, their needs and requirements.

Experience and know-how

At SEMER, after-sales service is closely linked to design; teams exchange skills and feedback within a single “Design – After-Sales Service” design office. The understanding of systems, businesses and processes is at the heart of the after-sales service to offer skills applicable to the latest generation ropeways meeting stringent specifications, but also to older ropeways with obsolete components… Like the renovation of two Diesel Railcars for the Compagnie du Mont Blanc (CMB) – locomotives 31 for the Mont Blanc tramway and 33 for the Montenvers, used for material transport and maintenance operations – that required all SEMER’s expertise. The SEMER after-sales service team beavered away closely with CMB to redraw the electrical diagrams of these two 800 HP 12-cylinder V-type diesel machines, dating from 1967 and 1972, in order to extend their lifespan and modernize them.

Diagnosis and reactivity, in France and abroad

2,000 hours: this is the time spent by SEMER on telephone assistance each year. While they offer increased responsiveness for the fastest possible restart, these calls are then cross-analyzed in order to improve the after-sales service approach and the design itself.

The “teleservice”, implemented 12 years ago by SEMER, also goes in this direction; with the agreement of the operator and according to a predefined protocol, SEMER can connect remotely to several hundred installations: the i-360 in Brighton, the MiniMetro in Miami and Cairo, the Barroso materials flyingbelt, the cable cars in New York, and many ropeways! A process that allows SEMER to visualize what the operator has in front of him in order to provide him with the most accurate diagnosis or advice possible.

SEMER also trains external technicians for better local responsiveness in maintenance operations; this is the case abroad, with employees of the POMA group’s foreign subsidiaries, but also in France via the partnership with EMP for the Pyrenees sector.

Anticipation, the key to successful maintenance

With HyperView, SEMER encourages ropeways operators to anticipate their maintenance operations. This year, Châtel, Chamrousse or Avoriaz – among others – are joining the ski resorts already equipped with the monitoring software developed by SEMER. The objective: to know and analyze precisely the past and present state of the lifts fleet in order to develop efficient and economical preventive and predictive maintenance. HyperView also allows you to generate several statistical tools on the technical performance of each installation: availability, energy efficiency, number of passengers, etc.

In parallel, SEMER always provides a traditional after-sales service (Magali or stock-pieces@semer.fr) for repairs on PLCs, drives, safety groups – with the distribution of spare parts – or more original, with alternative technical solutions for each component that has become obsolete or will disappear.

The Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola lift, a mythical installation in the Mont-Blanc massif and soon sexagenarian, has decided to give itself a new lease of life in spring 2015.

This pulsed-type ropeway (a fixed carrying rope + a hauling rope) connects France to Italy from the Aiguille du Midi to the Pointe Helbronner, in a majestic setting, flying over the Vallée Blanche and the Glacier du Géant over an exceptional distance of more than 5 km and an average altitude of about 3600 m.

Its renovation was necessary to replace obsolete equipment and the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc wanted to increase its functionality and reliability, while preserving an extraordinary high mountain setting, attracting several thousand people a year.

The technical solutions chosen therefore contribute to purifying the site, thus meeting the need to integrate the installation into the site, while increasing the availability of the gondola lift by the redundancy of all its components, both those of the main motorization and those of the emergency one. In the end, the installation is simplified, its components are less exposed to atmospheric risks, thus eliminating many operating constraints.

The work site of the extreme

As the construction site took place during the winter period, the SEMER/POMA/JOLY&PHILIPPE teams took up a real technological challenge, working in capricious weather conditions. The SEMER electrical cabinets, located facing the rock in a cramped room above the station, had to be transported by hoist from the outside!

From an electrical point of view, the major advantage of the renovation was to remove the Ward LEONARD group dating from 1975, which manufactures direct current for the electric motor, which was replaced by an asynchronous motorization with AFE inverter. The AFE inverter has many advantages, including better energy control by returning energy to the grid, resulting in an overall reduction in electricity bills, a significant detail for the operator. This new motor requires much less maintenance (saving time and supplies, saving “clean” energy) and allows the gondola lift to be operated on a generator set.

But the subtlety of this renovation lies in the installation of a second asynchronous motorization with AFE inverter, instead of an IC engine and its hydraulic emergency drive: a real ecological progress by eliminating the use of petroleum products and its related constraints.

Moreover, thanks to this new emergency motor, if it were necessary to evacuate, the operation would take half as long as for a “normal” ropeway, a reassuring precision when considering the 5 km of line length!

Horsepower under the hood

The gondola lift is therefore taking a new lease of life with two completely identical electrical equipment, as safe in operating mode as in emergency mode.

The new automated system ensures smooth motor control, limiting jolts and considerably reducing the risk of rope crossings, providing comfort for passengers while maintaining an operating speed of 7 m/s. And if necessary, the oversizing of the main motor (260 KVA) enables to easily uncross the ropes.

Thanks to SEMER technology, the modernization also made it possible to install a remote control desk on the platform. The workstation has become more efficient and ergonomic, making the operating staff more available for its customers and avoiding him having to climb stairs several times a day; which the staff appreciate because at this altitude, sparing oneself is not a luxury!

New advantage in terms of availability: a radio link

Based on its experience in remote transmission, SEMER has implemented two redundant two-way radio links between the Aiguille du Midi and the Gros Rognon station, thus increasing the availability of the lift. Gone are the recurrent problems of wind factor on the old wired link, the radio link being 100% reliable. In addition, visual pollution is reduced by removing the cables of the safety line. According to Olivier CHAMEL, Chief Operating Officer of the Aiguille du Midi, “no breakdowns occurred throughout the summer season, which is very appreciable”. With this installation giving complete satisfaction, it is planned to extend this radio link between Gros Rognon and Helbronner by spring 2016.

Given the exceptional setting and extreme conditions in which they operated, the teams from CMB, DSCA, SEMER, POMA, JOLY&PHILIPPE and the STRMTG inspection services performed a real technical feat, pooling their experience, know-how and determination.

And to refine its rejuvenation, the modernization of the gondola lift continues with the replacement of the Helbronner return station and its rescue equipment on the Italian side.

The CMB has renewed its confidence in the same players for an operational use scheduled for spring 2016.
